So the cat, or baby or bean or bambino, is out the the bag! We're due January 21 and cannot wait. We decided that when we found out we were expecting we would keep it a secret until the end of the first trimester. This proved to be a little harder than we anticipated, especially because it was during the summer and this is when we really shine, i.e. go out for drinks with friends, play on the boat, attend weddings, and so on. So I knew keeping this a secret from family and friends was going to be a little tricky. We put water in my beer bottle and for good measure added a lime! I made mixed drinks so that no one could tell there was no alcohol in them. Looking back I think if everyone had thought about it hard enough they would have figured it out because I love my wine! We were feeling more assured at about 10 weeks and when my parents came up to visit we decided to surprise them with the news. I put a picture of the ultrasound in a frame and hung it in the guest room/soon-to-be nursery. When my parents arrived we told them to put their bags in their room and we would get some drinks somewhere. My dad, in true Sparky fashion, looked directly at the frame and said "cute". Then mom looked at it, smiled and said cute, and started to walk away. She took a few steps backwards, stared at the frame for a long minute and then said "what...who..." and I replied, "yep, that's our baby". The reaction from my mom is one for the books. She screamed "SHUTTTTT UPPPPPPPPPP" and ran over and gave me the biggest hug I have ever received. Porter went nuts and started running around the living room. I wish I had it on video because it was absolutely awesome.
We spent the weekend swearing my parents to secrecy and I could tell mom was going to have a very hard time. Can you blame her - its her first grandchild! Katie and Ryan came to visit and mom begged me to tell Katie so that she could have someone else to talk to about "the bean". So, we told Katie and she was excited for us, but she had to keep it a secret until we could tell Dave's parents in person in two weeks. Sarah and her boyfriend Jonathan were coming to visit for the 4th of July (11 weeks preggers) and I knew there was no way I could go a long weekend without her figuring it out. So I three-way called Meghan and Sarah and then told them the news together. Again, best reaction ever. The screams went on for forever. I wanted to surprise Dave's parents, but I couldn't do it the same way as we did with mine. Katie picked them up at the airport and the plan was to meet for breakfast at Katie's. When we arrived at Katie's, I had on an old maternity blouse that Dave's Aunt made Dave's mom when she was pregnant with Dave and walked into the family room. Dave's mom knew right away, and being able to surprise them was worth the wait! We called Dan, Rhonda and the girls and Darrin and Ali that afternoon. Its overwhelming how excited everyone is for us. We waited another two weeks to tell extended family and friends and once it was out, it was kind of a relief for us because keeping a secret this exciting for almost 4 months is so hard! Good thing too because at 15 weeks now, there is a very obvious bump!
Since most of our family and friends are out-of-state, I thought this blog would be the best way to share our fun news and baby bambino progress. We hope you continue to follow us!
